Shockwave Therapy
Shockwave therapy is a very effective treatment used by specially trained therapists, sports physicians and orthopaedic surgeons in line with NICE guidelines.
What is shockwave therapy?
This is a non-surgical modality that works by delivering rapid impulses of energy, targeted to specific damages tissue such as abnormal tendon structure and calcified tendons using an applicator. This increases blood flow within the treated area while stimulating cell regeneration and repair and reducing local factors that cause pain.
How does it actually work?
The therapist will ensure that the treatment is appropriate for your condition by running through several specific questions and provide a thorough analysis including special tests. This will provide specific treatment settings for your treatment session.
A probe will be pressed against your skin over the affected area. Impulses are delivered thorough the skin and spread through the tissue as shockwaves that initiates an inflammatory type of response. This prompts your body to respond naturally by increasing blood circulation and several blood vessels thus improving metabolism.
How does it feel?
The shockwaves are felt as pulses that can be slightly uncomfortable but nor painful. The treatment will be started as a low intensity and only increased when appropriate and with your consent.
This is now the non-surgical option for a number of conditions that previously may have required surgery.
